Conference Update

As the days count down to our conference we are delighted to confirm some additional details.

Our opening keynote panel celebrating the achievements of the Radio Studies Network is now confirmed, with presentations from Professors Peter Lewis, Kate Lacey, and Tim Wall. Each of these esteemed scholars have contributed not only to the development of Radio Studies, but were also part of the committee that established the Network in the late 1990’s. Their opening words sets the tone for our day celebrating the past, present, and future of radio and audio.

On the Friday night we have a listening event in the City Centre, offering delegates a chance to immerse themselves in audio, explore the city, and meet others. This will be held in the teaching spaces of the Northern Academy for Music Education, upstairs at the Fire Station. This is also a music venue and bar, close to both the Premier Inn and Holiday Inn.

Our first confirmed producer is Chantal Herbert,Chantal will be talking about her latest audio piece New Borders –on which she collaborated with photographer Dami Fawehinmi.

Chantal was one of the winning North East Emerging Artist Award in 2021 exhibited at the National Trust Property Seaton Delaval Hall. The audio amplified the voices of the Global Majority living in the North East. The project was a direct response to the 1770 painting ‘John Delaval (1756-1775) as a Boy and an Unidentified Attendant’. The painting depicts a young John Delaval with an unknown Black page boy on display in the West Wing. New Borders reimagined the artwork with a contemporary context by giving the usually unheard voice an identity using photography and audio in an exhibition originally staged in the Stables of Delavel Hall. Chantal will also talking about her new radio drama and documentary commissions for the BBC both of which related to Sunderland places and themes.
